Skinny Love – Bon Iver
Collaboration can be an incredibly important part of the music making process. Sharing your ideas with others and allowing them to input their own has created some of the best music anyone has ever heard. That being said, there is another way, and Bon Iver knows how it works. This song, along with the rest of his debut album ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’ was recorded in a cabin in the wilderness, alone, over a period of three months. Without anyone around to influence his ideas, he managed to create a singular vision, a fully formed thought that belongs to no one but himself, and it shows. This song struck an emotional chord with me before I even understood what the hell he was singing, and I think that speaks to the nature of his environment. What I’m really trying to say is that there are a lot of jag-offs with acoustic guitars making music alone, but they aren’t able to create music like this because they spend too much time trying to sound like something other than themselves. Listen!
